What’s the process for choosing custom furniture?

Ordering custom furniture is a bit more work and time-consuming than ordering out of a catalog. However, the end result is well worth it. With custom furniture, you’re guaranteed to end up with a piece that truly represents your design needs and personal style. Today, Ellecor walks you through the process of ordering a custom piece of furniture, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

Make a Plan

To start, you’ll want to figure out where the piece is going in your home. This will help you decide the dimensions of the piece, which is the first step. If the custom piece will replace a current piece of furniture and will go in the same spot, then just measure the current piece. If you’re picking out a piece for a new space, then it might help to consult with an interior designer or use a layout program to make sure the piece will work in the space.

Create a Budget

Once you know the dimensions of the piece, you’ll want to come up with a budget. Custom furniture is typically more expensive than store-bought, but you still want to have a rough idea of how much you’re willing to spend.

Consider the Lead Time

What’s the lead time you ask? Lead time is how long it takes from the time you order a piece until it arrives. Due to worldwide supply chain issues, custom furniture is taking longer than usual. So prepare for a two to three-month wait.

Define Your Aesthetic

When ordering custom furniture, the options are nearly endless. Therefore, you want to have an idea of what style you like. We recommend creating a Pinterest board with furniture that matches the vibe you’re looking for. You could even screenshot a few pictures and save them to your phone’s camera roll.

If you have no idea what type of style you’re looking for, you can always work with an interior designer. One thing a great interior designer will do is help you discover your personal home decor aesthetic.

Choose Your Make and Model

Now that you know the style you’re looking for, you can find furniture brands that fit your aesthetic. Then, start browsing the brands’ inventory. Save pieces you like as you go. It’s important to note, that not all custom furniture brands offer retail. Some brands require you to go through a specific retailer or work with a designer. After you’ve saved your list of options, check them against your requirements. Does it come in the appropriate size? Is it within your budget?

Customize

Unsurprisingly, with custom furniture, you’ll need to do some customization. More than likely, you’ll need to choose the fabric. If possible, order a sample so you can view the fabric in person. It can also be helpful to look at the fabric in the space so you can see how it will work with the other elements of the room. There will possibly be other features you’ll need to choose as well such as type of wood and finish. Once your piece is ordered, then all that’s left to do is wait!
