How to Make Your Home Light and Airy With Interior Design

Winter is an easy time to let clutter and dust build up in your home. You may not even realize it until those first few bright rays of sunshine peek through the windows and illuminate all you’ve collected in the last few months like a chipmunk and his nuts.

A cluttered and dark room can dampen moods and add to anxiety and depression. In today’s blog from Ellecor, our team of interior design professionals provides easy ways to create an open and bright space that offers light and relaxation.

Deep Clean & DeClutter

Clutter can be an issue for anyone, especially when we are all staying home more. Before you grab the dust cloth, start to declutter. Rule of thumb: If you don’t love it, if it doesn’t bring you joy, throw it out or donate.

As you look around the room, ask yourself these questions.

Books: “Am I going to read this book again?” If it’s not part of a collection of value, donate it.

Accessories:: “Am I tired of looking at that?”

If your home accents no longer fit your style, offer the right feeling or look old and worn, discard and donate. If you have too many things in a room, pare them down to one or two. Creating open space on shelvings, mantles, and tables allows air to move freely and the human eye to wander. This interior design style signals to the brain that there is open space to breathe.

Once your home is decluttered, clean it. This includes windows, window sills, mantles, and baseboards. Take down window treatments and wash. Consider buying new to create a fresh look for a light and airy feel with interior design.

Window Treatments

If your curtains are dark and heavy, the room will take on that feel. Curtains with large, bold prints can do the same.

Consider changing out your current window treatments for a new, fresh look using linen or a cotton blend. Try lighter colors with small print or texture. Consider hanging the windows closer to the crown molding to give low-ceiling rooms a feeling of height and space.

If changing out curtains doesn’t feel like enough of a change for the look you want, paint color might be your answer for interior design.

Paint

When picking out a new paint color, people tend to get overwhelmed quickly. Staring at the vast number of swatches on the paint aisle can make the bravest DIY decorator start to sweat. In this moment of panic, we tend to grab the nearest white and be on our way. White can be a safe choice but it’s not always the right one for interior design.

The way to combat this is to identify the color palette you want for your room or home. Light and airy color palettes tend to be made up of monochromatic or harmonizing color schemes, meaning schemes that are composed of a single or double tint, hue, and shade. For instance, consider a warm white wall color complemented with creams, wheats, and golds.

If you’re a lover of color, a pale green or light blue accent wall complemented with cooler whites, silvers and darker greens can offer the same bright feel with a touch of color.

If creating a light and airy space is indeed your intention, avoid dark wall colors like black or dark hues in reds, browns, or blues.

Adding Detail and Final Touches

As with any successful project, creating a finished look can happen in the details. As mentioned earlier, when decluttering, keep only accents that will blend well with your new color palette and offer positive feelings.

When looking for new accessories, consider the following.

Scale. Purchasing vases, pictures, candlesticks and other accessories that are too big for the space that you’re placing them in can make the room suddenly feel small and burdened. In the same manner, choosing things too small can make them get lost in the room.

Texture. Limit your textures to three to four in a room. This limits the visual feel of ‘busyness” and offers a relaxing feel.

Color. Make sure your colors complement one another. Having too many “pops of color” can be overwhelming.

Patterns. The same rule applies to patterns. Often less is more when creating an open and airy space. If you want to mix florals with stripes, consider muted variations of the colors to soften the room.

When you have finished the room, set some rules for yourself. Resist the temptation to bring in more accents once the room is complete. Let the space sit for a while and see how you feel in it weeks later. If you’re still not feeling comfortable, then consider switching out accessories until you achieve the look you want for interior design.

The Easter season is a great time to introduce a breath of fresh air and all that spring has to offer in your interior design. The trick is finding and integrating the right elements into your existing palette, so your space is both bright and relaxing without feeling clashed or cluttered. Choosing the Right Color Palette

If you already have a set color palette in your home, integrating new colors can be a challenge. Choosing muted pastels, mixed with natural and neutral colors, can offer a fresh feel to a room without overwhelming or colliding with the existing colors.

Less is more. Introducing new colors for a season or holiday doesn’t have to be a total room makeover. A few pillows, a throw, and smaller elements like a vase can bring the desired effect.

Adding Textures & Patterns

Adding textures and patterns to your design can make the space visually interesting while creating depth and dimension. For spring, this is a perfect time to add florals and stripes. Toned-down versions can create a more neutral or even masculine space.

Bringing in parts of natural and organic elements like stone and wood to intermix with flowers and pastels is a great way to balance the pop of color and add texture. Look at wooden or concrete vases, natural branches, or driftwood.

Fresh Flowers & Blossoms

A vase of fresh flowers is always a nice touch. The colors can offer a new splash, while the fragrance can create feelings of happiness and relaxation. A centerpiece on a kitchen table, island, or dining table provides a wonderful way to set the tone for the meal. Be sure to keep the height below eye level and remove dying or dead flowers from the bouquet to maintain a fresh feeling. Smaller bouquets can be sprinkled throughout the house, like on coffee tables, bathroom vanities, and nightstands.

Think beyond the vase. A wreath using colorful flowers can be a welcome beacon to the season and to those who grace the doorstep.

Dishing Up the Holiday

If you’re not concerned with changing anything in the rest of the home, creating a festive space can be easily accomplished in the kitchen and dining room.

Introducing an Easter color palette can be done with new chargers, placemats, or dishes. Choosing a palette for the spring can range anywhere from greens and creams to muted pastels. Cloth or paper napkins in stripes or florals can add visual dimension and a festive flair.

Ellecor Interior Design is honored and humbled to be chosen as a 417 Home of the Year award winner for 2020! We earned this distinction for our work on a beautiful prairie modern home with an open floor plan.

Prairie Modern

Prairie modern homes are rare in Southwest Missouri, but the style is becoming more popular thanks to a warm, modern vibe. We combined modern furniture, fixtures and decor with natural elements in an open floor plan with lots of natural light for this stunning project.

We opted for wood on the ceiling instead of drywall, plenty of glass for natural lighting, lush rugs, and upholstered furniture that’s cozy to sit on and relax.

“All of the furniture is very comfortable, soft and liveable. None of those modern chairs that look like pieces of art that nobody wants to sit on,” said Haden Long, owner of Ellecor Interior Design.

More Awards in 2020

Our 417 Home of the Year honor caps off a stellar 2020. During the summer, we took home Best Kitchen and Best Mudroom awards from 417 Home.

In our best kitchen interior design, we combined a farmhouse feel with modern sightlines and plenty of storage.

“In this space we were presented with a challenging layout with corners, angles and multiple openings,” Long said of the award-winning kitchen.

For the mudroom, we had limited space to make use of, per the homeowner’s specifications. We added a hatch from the mudroom to the bedroom to make it easier to manage the laundry.

“[The hatch] was mostly to save space,” Long said. “We didn’t want to have that door swinging out into the hallway, and we didn’t want it swinging into the laundry room. It would just take up space no matter where it was.”

Interior design should appeal to as many senses as possible to create serenity and harmony. Sight is important when it comes to colors and lighting. Textures of fabrics, cabinets, tables, and countertops can all stimulate your sense of touch. Hearing the trickle of water from a fountain can help you relax as if you’re outdoors.

Why Scents Are Essential

Scents play a vital role in the interior design of your home. The trick is to have different fragrances for different rooms.

Our sense of smell has several purposes for interior design. Smells stimulate the limbic system in the brain, the same part of the brain associated with emotions, feelings, and memories. Scents and aromas trigger emotional reactions, which is why peaceful scents play a vital role in interior design. Scents also enhance our moods.

Strategically Place Scents in Various Rooms

Different rooms in the house should have various feelings associated with them.

Calming in the bedroom. Your bedroom is a sanctuary of calm and peace for a good night’s rest, so interior design is important here. Lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, pine, jasmine, and lemon all have a calming effect.

Fresh in the kitchen and dining room. Try not to compete with the rich aromas of food in the kitchen or dining room. Think of fresh notes like floral, herbaceous, or citrus scents like honey, bergamot, rosemary, thyme, and pear.

Home decor choices for water fountains run the gamut from small tabletop designs to large, freestanding structures. Some fountains bring in more nature, such as rocks, wood, or bamboo. Others are much more modern with steel and metal elements.
